April 30, 2010 7:02 pm

Washington. The attention of the UK staff will now turn to Marcus Thornton.

Make It 2 In A Row

April 29, 2010 4:05 pm

As if players needed yet another reason to head to Kentucky to play basketball for Head Coach John Calipari, Tyreke Evans took home the NBA Rookie of the Year honors today making it two years in a row that John Calipari has had a former player win the award. Derrick Rose won the award last season playing for the Chicago Bulls while Evans will take the award back to the Sacramento Kings. Now we’ll have to wait for the draft lottery to see which team will have the first shot at drafting next season’s rookie of the year, John Wall.

The Final Rivals Rankings

April 29, 2010 1:49 pm

Today relased their final rankings for the class of 201o. While Brandon Knight slipped from the #1 ranked player, Kentucky did see a couple other players climb up the list, most notably Enes Kanter. Here is where Kentucky’s commits and prospects are ranked.

  • #3- Enes Kanter (committed)
  • #6- Brandon Knight (committed)
  • #13- Terrence Jones (uncommitted, Friday 6:30)
  • #21- Doron Lamb (committed)
  • #33- Stacey Poole (committed)

Terrence Jones could complete the puzzle to another monster recruiting class on Friday. There are some reports starting to float out that Jones has already or is about to give a verbal to UK. These are a bit premature I think but we will know for sure at 6:30 tomorrow night. If Kentucky does miss on Jones, expect the staff to turn up the pressure on Georgia power forward Marcus Thornton.

Two Quick Notes

April 28, 2010 5:12 pm

I expected a calm Wednesday but within the last 20 minutes two major developments.

  • First, is reporting that C.J. Leslie has chosen N.C. State. Not too surprising but if true puts a lot of pressure on the Terrence Jones decision which will happen at 6:30 EST on Friday.
  • Secondly, in a story that is beyond bizarre, The National Enquirer is reporting that Dale Earnhardt Jr. has stolen the wife of UK Grad Assistant Tommy Cook. Of course coming from the Enquirer does not mean this is 100% true but like with the Tiger Woods incident, where there is smoke, there’s fire. You can read the story here.

That’s it for now. Go Big Blue!

Jarrod Polson Is A Cat

April 27, 2010 10:06 pm

Not a horribly busy day today. Kentucky learned that 2010 guard Jarrod Polson, West Jessamine’s all-time leading scorer, chose a preferred walk-on spot at Kentucky over a scholarship offer from Liberty University. I like the idea of having a few Kentucky players on the roster and Jarrod will bring that to next years team along with John Hood. There will be at least one other big decision this week when 5-star forward Terrence Jones chooses his future school on Friday. I still can’t give an exact date on when C.J. Leslie is to make his decision because I’m not sure he knows when he will make the call. That’s about it for today. You stay classy Big Blue Nation!

University of Kentucky East???

April 25, 2010 9:40 pm

The only news that drew any attention today was that the Philadelphia Eagles have signed thier 2nd Wildcat in as many days as gurad Zip Duncan inked a free agent deal. This now makes one wonder if UK is becoming a pipeline to the City of Brotherly Love?

This should be another big week for recruiting as Terrence Jones decides on Friday and C.J. Leslie could pull the trigger at any moment. Stay tuned and as always, Go Big Blue!!!

UPDATE: Tight End T.C. Drake has also signed a free agent deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.

A Saturday Recap

April 25, 2010 8:05 am

UK held their annual spring game on Saturday finishing out a busy weekend for the football team. We will break down the spring game but first here is an update as of Saturday night of the UK football players.

  • Corey Peters-Drafted in the 3rd round (83rd overall) by the Atlanta Falcons
  • Trevard Lindley-Drafted in the 4th round (105th overall) by the Philidelphia Eagles
  • John Conner-Drafted in the 5th round (138th overall) by the New York Jets
  • Alphonso Smith-Signed a free agent deal with the Arizona Cardinals
  • Justin Jeffries-Signed a free agent deal with the San Diego Chargers
  • Still no word on Sam Maxwell and Micah Johnson

The star of the day at today’s spring game was sophomore running back Donald Russell. On just 9 carries, Russell racked up 118 yards on the ground as well as a pair of touchdowns.  QB Mike Hartline was also able to find Russell on a 35 yard recepetion after he sliped out of the backfield adding towards his 153 total yards from scrimmage. The entire rushing attack looked like they were in midseason form as sophomore CoShik Williams and freshman Jonathan George chipped in to total 307 yards on the ground.

No one was able to seperate themselves in the 3-man QB race that includes Senior Mike Hartline and sophomores Morgan Newton and Ryan Mossakowski. Coach Phillips said after the game that Hartline takes a slight lead into the summer but that no decisions have been made.

On the defensive side of the ball things are a bit more shaky than on the offensive side. However one thing was clear on Saturday and that was Danny Trevathan will be the man to fill the role of departing seniors Micah Johnson, Corey Peters, and Trevard Lindley. There will be a lot of young players logging minutes for the Cats on defense this year and their ability to step up and contribute will be the deciding factor on whether or not this team can go bowling on New Year’s Day this season.

And finally I’ll add one quick basketball note. The draft stock of Eric Bledsoe may be slipping a bit lately due to the large amount of underclassmen entering the draft. His likely draft spot will depend heavily on his upcoming workouts at the NBA Draft Combine. If he performs poorly and by not having already signed with an agent, he has left the door open for a possible return to UK for his sophomore season.  Just something to keep in the back of your mind for now.

As always, GO BIG BLUE!!!

NFL Draft Update-3

April 24, 2010 12:39 pm

John Conner becomes the 3rd Wildcat drafted as the New York Jets used the 8th pick of round 5 (#139 overall) to snag the fullback. This should be a good fit for Conner as the Jets led the NFL in rushing last season.

NFL Draft Update-2

April 24, 2010 10:37 am

Trevard Lindley becomes the 2nd Wildcat taken in the 2010 NFL Draft. The Philidelphia Eagles selected Lindley with the 7th pick in the 4th round (105th overall).
