Wednesday News

March 31, 2010 12:56 am

We have a couple of quick notes for today, mostly to do with recruiting, but first let’s take a minute to remember “Mr. Wildcat”, Bill Keightley, who we lost two years ago today. Mr. Wildcat was the equipment manager for the UK Basketball team from 1962-2008. During that time he worked for 6 coaches and witnessed 3 NCAA Championships. Mr. Wildcat joins former radio announcer Cawood Ledford as the only two people recognized with a retired jersey in the rafters of Rupp Arena that were not a player or coach. There is no other man who epitomized what Kentucky Basketball is all about more than Mr. Wildcat. Below is the video that was played at Mr. Keightley’s memorial service.

To the news:

– The #1 prospect in the country, Brandon Knight, referred to Kentucky as “we” yesterday during an interview at the McDonald’s All-American Game. Take what you will from that comment on what it holds for the future but we will all know for sure on April 14th when Knight announces his college choice. I still think UK is the heavy favorite to land Knight.

-Another recruit C.J. Leslie said that staff memebers from UK indicated to him that 5 players will be departing from the team for the NBA, and that number does not include any of the 3 seniors. We will get into that a little heavier in the near future, but if that is in fact true, that means Harris, Stevenson, Krebs, Patterson, Wall, Cousins, Bledsoe, and Orton would all be departing from this past season’s team.

– UK Hoops fell last night to Oklahoma 88-68 in the Women’s NCAA Elite 8. It was a tough night for the women’s team as they did not look very good after jumping out to an early 15-3 lead. It still was a fantastic season for the women as they set a record for the most wins in school history as well as reaching the programs second ever Elite 8.

That should cover it for the day. Check back tomorrow as we will break down what will happen with the underclassmen from this season’s team. GO BIG BLUE!!!

#1 Kentucky-85 #23 Vanderbilt-72

January 31, 2010 8:30 pm

I was away at a golf tournament on Saturday and was unable to catch the game so I won’t have a full breakdown available for this game, but based on DeMarcus Cousins’ stat line (21 pts, 10 boards) it seems the big guy brought his A game again and helped Kentucky cruise to a 13 point win. A couple quick notes for the night

-Darnel Dodson got the start over Eric Bledsoe today. There have been no comments made as to why by the coaching staff but I do know they were very upset with Bledsoe’s play on Tuesday in Columbia so its worth keeping an eye on this Tuesday when Ole Miss comes to town.

-LeBron James was in attendence for Saturday’s game. It has been rumored many times before that he would show up for a game and finally he did. Coach Calipari and James have developed a very close relationship through the years and Lebron showed up on a rare night off to show support to his close friend.

-As well as DeMarcus Cousins played Saturday, he still couldn’t escape Rupp Arena without some controversy. Cousins threw an (intentional) elbow towards the face of Vanderbilt player. The referees reviewed the play on the monitors courtside and let him go with just a foul. Cousins caught a break there but later during the 2nd half he was given a technical for something he said to a referee. Coach Calipari said he heard what Cousins said and he did deserve the technical.  As much as I love the attitude that #15 plays with, you can almost count on at least one moment in every game where you find yourself holding your breath hoping he stops before he does get tossed. In Cousins defense, the big man does get pushed and shoved more than anyone I can remember and with the exception of Saturday’s game has come a long way in maturing on the court.

-And finally the UK Hoops team for the 2nd time this week went on the road to Starkville, Mississippi and overcame a 1 point halftime deficit to knock off the Lady Bulldogs 69-59. Victoria Dunlap again led all scorers with 19 and the win improves the UK Hoops team to 18-3.

The updated rankings come out tomorrow  and I believe we will find ourselves ranked 3rd or 4th so I will be around to update those and on Tuesday I will have the scouting report on the Ole Miss Rebels getting you set for tip off at 7:00 on ESPN.  Wednesday I will go through all of the signing day news and take the first look at the 2010 edition of Kentucky Football. Go Big Blue!!!

Matthew Mitchell led his #23 UK Hoops team down to Baton Rouge for a top 25 matchup tonight against the Lady Tigers of LSU who found themselves ranked 19th in the country. Victoria Dunlap’s 24 points and 9 boards led the Cats to a 2nd half surge breaking a halftime tie to give Mitchell’s UK Hoops their 17th win this season. On the mens side, head coach John Calipari recieved a call from Texas coach Rick Barnes today and the two discussed being “under attack” as together both teams have lost 3 in a row while being ranked #1 (UT: @ Kansas St and @UCONN, UK: @USC). We will be around tomorrow to get you prepared for the SEC leading Vanderbilt Commodores, until then GO BIG BLUE!!!
